Turkey is unlikely world golf destination

Dollar and Euro Currency

An unlikely destination is challenging Spain and Portugal for the title of the favourite golfing destination in the Mediterranean, because Turkey is emerging as the go-to country of choice.

Value for money and world-class courses are the main reasons the focus has been shifting towards Turkey in recent years, and the fact that the country is holding its first PGA Open later this year is only serving to increase the pressure on the established favourite destinations.

Turkish property close to a fairway is seeing particular benefits from the increase in interest, as demand for good quality accommodation goes hand in hand with the demographic most likely to follow the trends in golfing destination popularity.

Turkey is perhaps surprisingly now the fourth most popular golf travel destination in the world (after Spain, Portugal and Scotland) according to accountancy KPMG's recent Golf Travel Insights 2013 report.

This means the country has moved up a place from last year’s fifth position, at the expense of the USA which has now fallen to eighth place.

The hub of golfing activity in the country is at Belek, which is near Antalya on the Mediterranean coast. It was named 'Europe's Best Golf Destination' at the Golf Magazine Awards earlier this year.

The easy air access to Belek means it is ideally placed for golfers to travel to from all around the world, as Antalya's international airport is the second busiest airport in Turkey.

Turkey will take a great leap forward in its world standing for golf later this year when in November the first Turkish Open takes place as part of the European Tour International Schedule. The competition will be played at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal Club in Belek as part of a three-year, $7 million agreement.

With interest in property around Belek set to increase in the run up to the open, anyone considering transferring money abroad to Turkey should take the time to compare the exchange rates offered by currency specialists with those available from the banks.
