The U.S. Dollar is the officially accepted currency of the United States of America and its territories, as defined in the constitution of the United States. The currency is subdivided into cent units and the circulating money is made up of Federal Reserve Notes. The US dollar is used as a reserve currency because it is used in international transactions, not forgetting that several countries use the dollar as their official currency. To give you a clear overview of the currency, here is its history.

History of the US Dollar

Initially, the American dollar coin was derived from the value of the Spanish dollar, which was used in Spanish America between the 16th and 19th centuries. Therefore, the first US dollar coins that were issued in 1972 by the United States Mint inherited different properties from the Spanish dollar including size and composition. The first definition of the US dollar was issued through the Coinage Act of 1792, which stated that the dollar would be based on the Spanish dollar and its value would carry 371 grains as well as 4 sixteenths parts of a single grain of standard silver.

Unlike later variants of the dollar coins, the earliest released versions did not come with the face of any president of the United States. The law has since changed and the only face that can be put on coins is that of a deceased president. In fact, modern governments have been fiercely fighting against using any faces on the currency and this issue has continued to elicit views from different quarters over the recent past.

During the American Revolution, a new variant of the currency referred to as the continental currency was created and its purpose was to facilitate payments of military expenses. However, the Continental currency suffered severe depreciation during the war, and this gave rise to the famously applied phrase not worth a continentals.

Collector coins

Collectors and speculators can get Proof Sets from the United States Mint. There are different coins on display including Silver Proofs containing 90% silver. From 1983 up to 1997, the Mint has been producing collector coins with the commemorative coins of the year and put alongside regular coins. There are also special sets of $1 coins that are minted every year that feature a president.

Due to the fact these unpopular coins were forming a stockpile and the budgetary constraints that lay behind their production, circulation was stopped on December 13, 2011 and any minting of these coins was reserved specifically for collectors. The regulation of the value of domestic and foreign coins using the US Dollar as a base is in the hands of the congress, according to the U.S. Constitution Section 8.

The dollar circulated in harmony with the Spanish dollar and Mexican peso in the US until 1857, when it was declared that the dollar would become the sole legal currency in the US.
