Sudanese Dinar A Brief History

Sudanese Dinar was the main currency for the Republic of Sudan between 1992 and 2007. It was issued by the Bank of Sudan on the 8th of June, 1992 to replace the first Sudanese Pound. The Sudanese Dinar was valued 10 times of the value of the first Sudanese Pound. The notes issues for the Sudanese Dinar were available in the denominations of ten, twenty, twenty-five, fifty, hundred, two hundred, five hundred, thousand, two thousand and five thousand Sudanese Dinars.

But in the fifteen year period the Sudanese Dinar was in circulation, it wasn't the only legal currency in use. The first Sudanese Pound was still in use, albeit it had very less value as compared to the Sudanese Dinar. Several coins for the Sudanese Dinar were also minted and issues by the Bank of Sudan. These coins consisted 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50. Smaller coins of  and ¼ were also planned but they never made into the circulation, probably due to the low value of the currency.

On January 10th 2007, a second Sudanese Pound was issues by the Bank of Sudan which were to replace the Sudanese Dinar within six months. The new second Sudanese Pound, at the time of its issuance was valued 100 times the value of a Sudanese Dinar. It was on the 1st of July 2007, that Sudanese Dinar was rendered obsolete and the second Sudanese Pound replaced it as the only legal currency in the Republic of Sudan.

Many locals hold emotional and historic attachment to the Sudanese Dinar as it was the currency while the country was going through a vicious civil war which ended up separating the country into two. Many currency collectors hold old Sudanese Dinar banknotes and coins as souvenirs from a historic time in the history of Sudan, a nation which has been home to several great civilizations that took birth at the banks of River Nile. In recent news, plans are being made to replace the predecessor to Sudanese Dinar with a newer version to stabilize the currency and economy of the country.
