The Solomon Islands Dollar is a currency that has only seen use relatively recently. Below are details on the history of the Solomon Islands currency and some facts about the money in both its present and previous incarnations.

A Solomon Islands History

 

Originally, the Solomon Islands used the Australian Pound Sterling. Despite using the Australian Pound Sterling as the basis of their currency system, the Solomon Islands issued their own banknotes known as the the Solomon Islands Pound.

 

During World War Two, control of the islands fell to Imperial Japan, and for a short time the Oceania Pound was used - sometimes referred to as Japanese Invasion Currency - before the currency was reverted to the Solomon Island Pound.

 

In 1966 the currency was changed to the Australian Dollar and remained that way for several years, up until The Solomon Islands independence in 1976.

 

From 1977 to the present, the Solomon Islands Dollar has been the official currency of the Solomon Islands.

In 1977 coins were released in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 cents and 1 dollar. 1988 brought about the introduction of a 50 cent coin, bringing the amount of coins to 7 different denominations. 

 

As the Solomon Islands experienced inflation, the 1 and 2 cent coins were no longer as useful and prices began to be rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

 

In 2012, the 1, 2, and 5 cent denominations were discontinued do to unreasonable costs of production, and a 2 dollar coin was introduced to take the place of the 2 dollar note.

 

The banknotes for the Solomon Islands Dollar were originally introduced in 2, 5, and 10 dollar denominations. In in 1980, 20 dollar notes were introduced, with a 50 dollar note coming shortly after in 1986.

 

The most recent change to the banknote currency came in 2006 with the introduction of a 100 dollar bill. Additional security features were also added to the new prints of currency, such as a tapered security number and a woven security thread.

 

The banknotes feature scenes of daily life and important pieces of culture from the country, and the Solomon Islands Dollar in its current form has matured into a currency that's useful to and reflective of the nation.
