The rupee or rupiya has been in circulation since 1947, the dissolution of the British Raj., the currency is subdivided into 100 paise, however coins in denominations of paise have not been in circulation or issued since 1994.

The currency of Pakistan is Pakistani Rupee - a country that has given its name to the currency has been widely used since its inception in India, Afganistan, and other caliph regions around the kingdom. With the onset of British Rule , the rupee was no longer in use and the Pakistani Rupee came into circulation again after the cessation of British Raj in 1947.

The first currency notes were issued by Bank of India and interestingly the notes had bilingual inscription contemplating the Bengali language and were used till 1971 (the currency was then called taka). Like Indian rupee, Pakistani Rupee was also divided into 16 annas - each with 4 pice - or 12 pie. The currency was later decimalized on January 1st, 1961 to rupee and then subdivided to 100 pice towards the later part of the year. The issuance of the currency note is now controlled by State Bank - Pakistan

Notes and Coins-

At first provisional notes were issued by Reserve bank of India after partition and then regular issuance started in 1948 with denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 100 rupees. 50 Rupee notes were introduced in 1957 and 500 Rupees notes were circulated in 1986 followed by 5000 Rupees in 2006.

Coins were also introduced in 1948 with multiple denominations- 1 pice, 1/2 pice, 1,2 annas. In 1961, coins for 1, 5 ,10 pice were introduced. All coin denomination of 5 , 10, 25 and 50 paisa were ceased in 1976. Now one rupee coin is the minimum tender.

In addition the issue of Hajj Notes needs to be mentioned here. During 1950's State Bank- Pakistan provided simpler exchange facilities to Hajj Pilgrims since most of the pilgrims were illiterate - although other means of exchange were also available. Use of these notes continued till 1978.

Pakistani rupee was initially pegged to British pound till 1982 and then Zia -ul -Haque managed to change it to floating exchange rate. The major depreciation of the currency touched a record low of 79.2 in the year 2008 when the global crisis had brought the currency down.

Currently Pakistani Rupee is also widely used in Afghanistan
