The first franc to be used in the Congo was during the Belgian colonial rule, when the franc was equal to the Belgian franc in value. This currency was also used in Rwanda and Burundi, until they adopted their own currency in 1960, and in Katanga, who issued their own currency, the Katanga franc, between 1960 and 1963.

Congo gained independence in 1967, and introduced the Zaire at a ratio of 1,000 francs to 1 Zaire. The currently issued Congolese franc was first issued in 1997, replacing the Zaire at a rate of 100,000 Z: 1 FC. This meant that the new franc was worth 300,000,000,000,000 old francs.

Currency Information on CDF. Congolese franc coins have been issued, but are no longer sued, due to inflation, with the smallest note in regular circulation being the 50franc note. Although denominational banknotes are available in 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimes, and 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20, 000 francs.

The Congolese Franc or CF is the currency of the Democratic Republic of Congo, also known as Franc. The symbol is FC or CDF (in terms of currency conversion or considered to be a code). It can be sub-divided into 100 centimes. There have been 2 editions of CF, out of which Congolese Franc is the second and the newest edition. 

History

In 1887, Franc was introduced for the very 1st time and the value of which was the same as Belgian Franc. In 1916, CF was promulgated in Burundi and Rwanda. Later on though they issued their own Franc. In 1967, independence was declared in Congo and Zaire replaced Franc. 1 Zaire was equal to 1000 Francs. Franc was introduced once again in 1997 and elimination of Zaire was done. The new conversion rate was 1 Franc = 100,000 Zaires. In 2010, the 50th anniversary of Central Bank was celebrated and they printed commemorative notes to celebrate their independence from Belgium.

Coins 

In 1887, copper coins that were holed were introduced with 1, 2, 5 and 10 centimes denominations for the very first time. Silver coins of 50 centimes and 1,2, 5 Francs were introduced. However over the period of time, as far as the second edition is concerned, due to inflation, coins are no more used, although they were issued. The smallest denomination that is used in 10 Francs.

Notes 

In 1896, Congo introduced 10 & 100 Franc notes for the very first time.

As per the second edition is concerned, franc was established again in 1997 and there was a new conversion rate this time. 1 franc = 100,000 zaires. In 1988 July, banknotes of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 centimes denominations & 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Francs were introduced. As of the year 2000, notes of 200 Francwere introduced and in the year 2002, Franc notes of 500. In the year 2012, Central Bank of Congo issued banknotes of new version of denominations of 20000, 10000, 5000 and 1000 Francs.

There is no substitute currency for Congolese Franc.
