Bringing Money into the Country
The local currency in use is the BWP which you can exchange at market rate in the bank. There are no restrictions on foreign currencies as long as you declare it before coming in.
Most of the larger cities and towns have ATMs for cash withdrawal, and most credit cards (American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa) are usually accepted.
You could also carry a travellers cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling. The travellers cheque is accepted in most of the large cities and is a good way of avoiding the high exchange rate. It does, however, have a high surcharge attached to it.
Substitute Currencies
The officially accepted currency in Botswana is the BWP. If you're lucky, you may come across shops that accept payment in dollars. The Safari Lodge is known to accept the US dollar. That way, you can pay for your accommodation in dollars without having to fear being stranded especially if you're low on the local currency.
However, to avoid any hassles, it is best you exchange your money at the bank at market rates. If you're going to be visiting the smaller villages, you'll likely need to exchange your currency at the airport or in major towns because of limited facilities in the villages.
Economic Trends in Botswana
The country remains one of the fastest growing economies in the world with an impressive economic growth, prudent macroeconomic and fiscal management, and good governance.
Major Banks in Botswana
Some of the main commercial banks you can visit for your monetary transactions include First National Bank, Stanbic Bank Botswana, Bank of Baroda, Barclays Bank of Botswana, and the Standard Chartered Bank. Each bank has their branches both in the towns and villages.
