Spanish food magnet for 5.6 million tourists

It isn’t just the climate and the friendly welcome that attracts millions of foreign holidaymakers to Spain every year. The superb cuisine is also a major source of the country’s appeal.

As well as featuring heavily in the lists of the best eating establishments in the world, a new report reveals just how important food is for all types of visitors to the country.

New statistics from Spain's tourism office show that an estimated €6.4 million was spent on food and wine by more than five and a half million tourists during 2012.

Marc Pritchard, the Sales and Marketing Manager for a leading Spanish house builder said: "I've lived in Mallorca for almost 20 years now and have never tasted food quite as good anywhere else. We cater to all tastes, from family run tavernas tucked away in the hills above Palma serving the finest steaks to small fishing villages dotted along the coast offering the freshest catch of the day.”

It isn’t just carnivores that are well catered for, as Mr Pritchard explained: “If meat or fish aren't to your taste, Spain prides itself on a variety of national dishes using home grown fresh vegetables such as patatas bravas, tortilla and berenjenas con miel, slices of aubergine, fried and covered in a dark, slightly bitter honey or molasses which are to die for.”

Each region of the country has a specific cuisine with many local delicacies and traditions, and of course the various wines of Spain hold their own with any of the other great wine producing nations.

The emergence of Spain as the dominant force in high-end restaurant food has also had an effect, with El Celler de Can Roca in Girona recently having been crowned the best on the planet.

As with anything that boosts the appeal of the country to tourists, it is all good news for the struggling property market as a continued influx of visitors means investors will always be able to rely on good rental incomes.
